The history of video poker has the same roots as poker, because casino video poker is based on poker. Poker started around the 17th century or possibly before it. The in 1891 two chaps by the names of Sittman and Pitt used the idea of poker and created video poker. During this time the slot machine was invented but this other chap, Fey, and the slot machine influenced Sittman and Pitt in creating video poker. Their first video poker machine was a 50 card symbol with five drums.
Only recently, in the 1970′s, did video poker become the game as we know it today, with the use of poker hands. A company by the name of Dale Electronics created the Poker Matic Las Vegas video poker machine and it was used in Vegas casinos. It wasn’t that popular in those days and only in 1975, when Walt Fraley designed a different type of video slot, did video poker become popular amongst gamblers.
In 1979 video poker became the mainstream casino game like blackjack and slots because IGT created the first Draw Poker game. It was so popular mainly because you didn’t see the reels spins, like in slots, and you were actually playing poker. So nowadays you have various types of video poker games to play like draw poker, deuces wild, aces and kings, jacks or better and many others. They are all based on the same game but have different payouts and winning combinations.
In 1994, with the invention of the internet, video poker was taken to new heights with online casino video poker. So today you are able to download software that enables you to play video poker at home on your computer and win big like in Vegas casinos.
